The northeast monsoon or “amihan” is bringing generally fair weather over most parts of Luzon, while the shear line continues to cause rains in parts of the Visayas, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday, Feb. 22.
PAGASA weather specialist Veronica Torres said the amihan remains the dominant weather system over Luzon.
“Amihan naman o northeast monsoon ‘yung nakakaapekto sa Luzon at nalalabing bahagi ng Visayas (The amihan or northeast monsoon is affecting Luzon and the rest of the Visayas),” Torres said.
Metro Manila and much of Luzon may expect fair weather conditions, with chances of light rains, she said.
“Para naman sa lagay ng panahon sa Metro Manila at nalalabing bahagi ng Luzon, fair weather condition ang ating inaasahan na may mga tiyansa ng mga mahihinang pag-ulan (For the weather condition in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, we expect generally fair weather with chances of light rains),” she explained.
However, Cagayan, Isabela, and Aurora may experience cloudy skies with light rains due to the amihan.
The shear line, meanwhile, is affecting the eastern portion of the Visayas.
“Sa kasalukuyan, ito ang nakakaapekto sa may silangang bahagi ng Visayas (At present, this is affecting the eastern portion of the Visayas),” Torres said.
The agency said cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected over Eastern and Central Visayas due to the shear line.
Torres added that easterlies or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean are affecting the rest of Mindanao.
“At sa nalalabing bahagi ng Mindanao, partly cloudy to cloudy skies at may mga tiyansa ng localized thunderstorms (And in the rest of Mindanao, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of localized thunderstorms),” Torres said.
PAGASA warned residents, particularly those who have experienced continuous rains in recent days, to remain vigilant against possible flooding and landslides.
“Kaya ‘yung ating mga kababayan, lalo na ‘yung mga inuulan noong mga nakaraang araw pa, ay pinag-iingat sa mga banta ng pagbaha o hindi kaya pagguho ng lupa (That is why our fellow citizens, especially those who have been experiencing rains in the past few days, are advised to be cautious against the threats of flooding or landslides),” Torres said.
The agency said no low-pressure area or tropical cyclone is being monitored within or near the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
