Executive Secretary Ralph Recto expressed confidence that lawyer Melvin Matibag would uphold the bureau’s high standards of service as he administered the latter’s oath as the new director of the National Bureau of Investigation in Malacañan on Friday, Feb. 20.
In a statement on Saturday morning, Feb. 21, Recto said he believes Matibag will not only live up to his oath as NBI director, but also “to the high standard of service required of its leader.”
He said this confidence stems from Matibag’s experience in “equally challenging” government jobs he performed in the past.
“Added to this is his deep respect for and knowledge of the law, the faithful observance of which is an NBI hallmark, the reason why it remains esteemed as an effective crimefighting unit,” Recto said.
The Executive Secretary said he conveyed to Matibag President Marcos’ instruction to make the NBI “a stronger instrument of stopping crime, attaining justice, securing peace, and guarding the national interest.”
As he welcomed Matibag to his new post, Recto also thanked outgoing NBI Director Lito Magno, who served “with integrity, and will continue to do so, in the finest NBI tradition.”
Matibag’s appointment was earlier announced by Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro, who said the choice of the new NBI chief was the President’s prerogative.
Castro said the President saw in Matibag someone who could be trusted and who could work for the government.
Matibag previously served as acting Cabinet Secretary in March 2022 during the final months of former president Rodrigo Duterte’s term.
He has also held positions in various government institutions, including the National Transmission Corporation, Manila International Airport Authority, and Laguna Lake Development Authority, among others.
