Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” Lacson said he is confident that the issue on corruption will remain the greatest test of leadership as the presidential race for 2028 starts to take shape.
Lacson pointed this after Vice President Sara Duterte, on Wednesday, Feb. 18, announced her plan to run for president in the May 2028 elections.
The following day, the "united opposition" said it will announce by yearend the candidates it will field for the 2028 polls.
As one who has consistently fought corruption in its various forms, Lacson said that with his years in government concluding on June 30, 2031, he can only hope for the best for the country.
“Being in the twilight of my public service career which ends on June 30, 2031, I can only hope for the best to happen to our country in the decades to come,” Lacson said.
“I believe corruption is the biggest stumbling block in achieving economic progress and development that our people rightly deserve,” he further said.
Lacson said it is the right of every Filipino who is qualified under the Constitution to run for an elective public office.
“I am sure VP Sara Duterte and her advisers have their reasons for declaring early. I can only wish her good luck in her bid and will pray for her intentions and whoever else will decide to run to lead our country in 2028-2034,” he said.
