DAVAO CITY – The Malaysian Consulate General here, in partnership with DusitD2 Davao, launched Ramadan Nights on Wednesday, Feb. 18, positioning the culinary fair as both a celebration of Ramadan and a platform to strengthen tourism and people-to-people ties between Malaysia and the Philippines.

In his remarks, Malaysian Consul General Deddy Faisal bin Ahmad Salleh described food as “one of the most effective forms of cultural diplomacy—accessible, authentic, and memorable,” noting that the event showcases Malaysia’s values of hospitality, harmony, and respect for diversity.

The Consul General highlighted Ramadan as a month observed by Muslims worldwide for reflection, discipline, and compassion, and emphasized that in Malaysia, it reflects shared national values of moderation, gratitude, generosity, and coexistence, as shown by a Maghrib prayer before the program.

A Maghrib prayer, performed immediately after sunset, marks the fourth of the five daily Islamic prayers. It holds special significance during Ramadan, as it signals the breaking of the fast. Observing the prayer before the program underscored the evening’s spiritual foundation.

Salleh recalled that Ramadan bazaars across Malaysia are open and inclusive spaces where people of different backgrounds and religions gather to enjoy traditional Malay dishes and break fast together.

While mosques remain central to the spiritual observance of Ramadan, he said, iftar gatherings are also commonly held in community centers, hotels, offices, and public venues, reflecting what he described as Malaysia’s inclusive and multicultural character.

“In this way, Ramadan in Malaysia is not only a religious observance, but a living expression of national harmony—where faith, culture, and diversity come together naturally at the same table,” Salleh said.

DusitD2 Davao General Manager Vanessa Suatengco said that the program marks the first formal collaboration between the Malaysian Consulate General and the hotel, describing it as a milestone partnership that opens the door for future cultural and tourism initiatives.

Suatengco said the event goes beyond a themed dining experience, noting that it creates a shared space where guests from different backgrounds can gather, learn about Malaysian traditions, and connect over food.

“Events like this bring people together,” Suatengco said, emphasizing that hospitality plays a key role in fostering understanding across cultures.

The hotel manager added that by hosting Malaysian Ramadan Nights, the hotel is not only showcasing authentic cuisine but also supporting cross-cultural exchange and strengthening ties between Malaysia and the local community in Davao.

Salleh thanked DusitD2 Davao and Dusit Thani Residence Davao for supporting the initiative. He credited Chef Benny Ho and his kitchen staff for curating what he called an authentic Malaysian Ramadan experience, ensuring that the dishes presented are “not just flavorsome, but true to tradition.”
