ILOILO CITY – Licurgo “Curging” Tirador, the post-EDSA governor of Iloilo province, has died at the age of 94.
“He peacefully passed away on Feb. 18, 2026 at the age of 94 surrounded by family,” announced Pototan town councilor Paolo Tirador on Facebook.
Licurgo was appointed by President Corazon Aquino following the 1986 EDSA People Power revolution.
“He helped ensure stability and continuity in provincial governance during a time of national transition,” Councilor Tirador noted.
After serving as governor, Licurgo was elected congressman for three consecutive terms representing the third district of Iloilo from 1987 to 1998. Among his key legislations were strengthening public education and local infrastructure.
Tirador also served as Iloilo provincial board member, mayor of Pototan, and municipal councilor of Pototan.
A lawyer by profession, Tirador was a delegate to the 1971 Constitutional Convention.
According to the website of the Iloilo Provincial Library, Tirador graduated elementary at the now University of San Agustin, high school at Ateneo de Cagayan, undergraduate at the then University of the Philippines-Iloilo College (UPIC), and had a law degree from Ateneo de Manila University.
Tributes have poured in for Tirador.
“Throughout his life, left a lasting legacy in Philippine politics and public service, marked by dedication, integrity, and steadfast leadership in serving his community and the nation,” said the Iloilo provincial government led by Gov. Arthur “Toto” Defensor Jr.
"He was a pillar of local governance, a mentor to many, and a true servant of the Ilonggo people, especially his beloved Pototan. His legacy of leadership, dedication, and integrity will continue to inspire generations," said the League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Iloilo (LMP-Iloilo) led by Mayor Suzette A. Mamon of Badiangan town.
