The temporary bridge replacing the collapsed Cabagan-Santa Maria bridge in northern Isabela is nearing completion and expected to reopen to light vehicles in March 2026, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced Thursday, Feb. 19.
DPWH Cagayan Valley reported the construction is 89 percent complete.
Spanning 990 meters over the Magat River, the bridge connects the towns of Sta. Maria and Cabagan.
The original bridge collapsed on February 27, 2025, after a dump truck carrying 89.63 metric tons crossed its third segment, nearly double the 45-ton limit.
Investigations identified overloading and repeated heavy passage as likely causes of structural fatigue.
A project engineer initially reported a “structural failure” of the concrete slab in the bridge’s eighth span.
The P1.2-billion bridge was built from November 2014 to February 2025.
