CABANATUAN CITY, Nueva Ecija — A robbery suspect was killed and a police officer was wounded in an encounter on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija.
Personnel of the Bongabon Municipal Police Station flagged down two motorcycles with two unidentified men believed to be involved in a robbery incident in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija.
Instead of stopping, the suspects sped off towards the town proper, prompting police to pursue them.
The chase ended when the motorcycles crashed on the road.
The suspects fled on foot and one of them fired at pursuing officers who retaliated and wounded a suspect.
He was declared dead in a hospital while his companion was apprehended at the scene.
A responding police officer was wounded and taken to the hospital. He is in stable condition.
Police withheld the identities of the suspects pending verification and notification of their families.
Nueva Ecija police chief Police Col. Heryl Bruno said the operation underscores the risks faced by law enforcers in the line of duty.
He reiterated that police will remain relentless against criminal elements in line with the directives of Police Regional Office-3 and the national leadership of the Philippine National Police.
