PNP looks into digital technology-enabled abuses vs children
The Philippine National Police (PNP has intensified the efforts against online harassment and exploitation of children, especially those using artificial intelligence or AI.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said he already tasked the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) to look into the reports amid concerns raised on the threats that children face daily, particularly those exposed in various social media platforms.
“We are committed to protecting our children from online dangers. By working hand in hand with other government agencies, we aim to stop these abuses before they reach our youth," Nartatez said.
Child rights advocacy groups have raised alarm over a surge in technology-enabled abuses, which often targets Filipino children.
They reported that certain applications are being used to create manipulated sexual images, deepfake content, and impersonation scams, which are often difficult to detect.
Nartatez said PNP personnel would coordinate with other government agencies to prevent children from being harmed online due to exposure to modern technologies.
He then urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, “We call on everyone to stay alert and report any suspicious online activity. Your vigilance can help protect our children from abuse that often goes unnoticed.
The PNP emphasized that the protection of children begins at home as it encourages parents, guardians, and communities to cooperate in safeguarding minors from all forms of online abuse.
