BACOLOD CITY – A 42-year-old man and his nine-year-old nephew drowned while gathering shells on the Nabinay River in Barangay Mabini, Cadiz City, Negros Occidental on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
Police Lt. Daleen Grace Loreno, deputy chief of the Cadiz City Police Station, said the man, Jesus, brought his two nephews to the river to gather shells.
One of the children was reportedly swept away by the strong current.
His uncle attempted to rescue him but were carried away by the current and drowned.Their companion sought help from relatives who informed authorities who conducted search and retrieval operations that lasted between two and three hours.
The victims were recovered and taken to a hospital where they were declared dead.
