TACLOBAN CITY — The Leyte Police Provincial Office (LPPO) has reported a significant decrease in road crash incidents in the province in 2025.
Police Col. Dionisio Apas Jr., LPPO director, said that from 1,537 incidents in 2024, the number declined 29.2 percent to 1,091 last year.
Apas attributed the decrease to intensified interventions in enforcement, education, community engagement, engineering coordination, and environmental and economic considerations.
LPPO presented a database using a map-based platform, showing that Baybay City recorded the most cases, with 256 in 2024 and 165 in 2025.
“You will see the pattern where there are groupings of incidents, which is why with this map-based data, we are able to focus the deployment of personnel on the roads,” Apas said.
He added that they also included other crimes, such as stabbing and shooting, in the database, which is readily accessible through their mobile phones and tablets for faster monitoring and response.
Other interventions include “Oplan Bantay Kalsada,” “Oplan Bandilyo,” checkpoints, anti-drunk driving operations, and the deputation of Ride for Responsibility, Implementation, Discipline, Education, and Road Safety (R.I.D.E.R.S.) in partnership with the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
Apas said that they do not have speed guns and breath analyzers yet and urged support from local government units to further enhance their technology-based approach to addressing road crash incidents in the province.
