ILOILO CITY — One individual was killed and more than 360 persons were displaced in two separate fires in Jaro District here on Monday, Feb. 16.
The fatality was identified as Rustom Ancieta, a 24-year-old criminology graduate who was trapped inside a car repair shop in Barangay Balabago.
Ancieta was allegedly drinking heavily the night before and may not have been able to escape as the fire quickly engulfed the repair shop.
The second and bigger fire occurred before 1 p.m. in Barangay Benedicto.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) raised the fire to fourth alarm.
The fire moved quickly due to strong winds and fire trucks could not easily maneuver due to narrow streets.
The Iloilo City Social Welfare and Development Office said 366 people from 106 families were affected by the fire.
More than 80 houses were damaged.
Many victims are staying in evacuation centers.
