Specialized justice zones to be launched in 3 cities in Eastern Visayas on Feb. 19
Three specialized justice zones (JZs) will be launched on Thursday, Feb. 19, in Tacloban City, Ormoc City, and Calbayog City to enhance the government’s fight against sexual abuse and exploitation of children in Eastern Visayas.
The tri-city JZs will be inaugurated by the Justice Sector Coordinating Council (JSCC) which is led by the Supreme Court (SC), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
In a press briefer, the SC’s Office of the Spokesperson said the launching will be held in Tacloban City at the Summit Hotel starting 10 a.m.; in Ormoc city at the Sabin Resort Hotel starting at 9 a.m.; and in Calbayog City at the city’s Sports Center starting at 9 a.m.
A JZ is where judges, prosecutors, law enforcers and representatives of local government units (LGUs) meet on common interests, coordination, and information sharing in the dispensation of justice.
In September 2024, tri-city JZs were inaugurated in Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City, and Ozamis City because of a high number of cases involving Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) and Child Sexual Abuse or Exploitation Material (CSAEM).
The JSCC had earlier said that the three cities in Mindanao “also have the highest number of convictions for trafficking in persons, OSAEC and other related laws from 2003 to present.”
With the inauguration of the three JZs in Eastern Visayas, there would be 19 JZs nationwide.
Set up earlier were the JZs in Quezon City, Cebu City, Davao City, Angeles City, Bacolod City, Naga City, Calamba City, Balanga City, Baguio City, Zamboanga City, Tagaytay City, Puerto Princesa City, and Dagupan City.
Earlier, the JSCC had said that the three Eastern Visayas cities met the criteria set under the Justice Zone Components which require at least 40 inter-agency coordinative reforms spanning the entire criminal justice process -- from case initiation to adjudication and post-judgment actions.
