Canada-born Filipino filmmaker Ian Tuason is making his international breakthrough as the premier studio A24 prepares to release his debut feature-length horror-thriller, Undertone, in theaters across the United States.
The film follows Evy (Nina Kiri), who lives with her comatose mother and records a spooky podcast in the middle of the night with her co-host, Justin (Adam DiMarco), who lives in the U.K. When the pair is sent a series of distressing audio clips of a couple that sounds like they are facing some literal demons, the scary recordings start to blur the lines of reality for Evy, as listening to them might have unleashed evil on her as well.
After making its premiere at Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival last July 2025. Undertone won gold in the Best Canadian Feature category and was selected for the Sundance Film Festival last month in the Midnight Program.
After getting positive reviews from movie critics and filmmakers, US entertainment news outlet Deadline reported that A24 secured the film’s worldwide distribution rights in a “mid-7 figures” deal involving “six buyers in the mix.”
A24 is the studio behind horror hits "Midsommar" and "Hereditary" and award-winning films like "Everything Everywhere All at Once’ and ''Past Lives.''
To date, A24 has earned 87 Academy Award (Oscar) nominations and 21 wins, widely regarded as the highest honors in the film industry.
Marking a major milestone in his career, Ian is set to write and direct the reboot of the classic horror franchise Paranormal Activity, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s December 2025 report.
