BUTUAN CITY – The Tandag city government in Surigao del Sur ordered the temporary closure of a beach resort on Saturday following the drowning of a foreign national.
Mayor Roxanne Pimentel issued Executive Order No. 7 on Monday, creating a joint inspection team to conduct a safety assessment and investigation.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office received a call on Friday about a drowning incident in a Barangay Buenavista resort. Search operations failed to locate the victim that day, but his body was recovered Saturday afternoon.
"The incident necessitates appropriate coordination with relevant national government agencies to ensure proper investigation, documentation, consular notification, maritime safety review, and adherence to applicable legal and diplomatic protocols," Pimentel stated in the order.
She noted the city exercises regulatory supervision over tourism establishments through business permitting, safety compliance enforcement, and disaster risk reduction oversight.
The joint inspection team includes representatives from the Business Permits and Licensing Division, Philippine National Police, City Health Office, CDRRMO, and other local offices. The team will assess compliance with tourism, sanitation, and safety standards and submit recommendations to the mayor's office. (PNA)
