A minor strombolian activity was recorded at the summit crater of Mayon Volcano early Sunday morning, Feb. 15, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs said the activity occurred at 5:20 a.m. and 5:28 a.m. on Feb. 15, and was accompanied by seismic and infrasound signals.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), strombolian eruptions are characterized by intermittent explosions or bursts of expanding gases that eject incandescent lava fragments.
“Effusive eruption at Mayon Volcano continues for the 41st consecutive day, generating incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or ‘uson’, and rockfall,” Phivolcs said.
The agency reiterated that Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano.
Under Alert Level 3, Mayon Volcano is in a state of magmatic unrest, with an increased tendency toward hazardous eruption.
Phivolcs reminded the public that entry into the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) must be strictly prohibited due to persistent hazards posed by lava flows, pyroclastic density currents, rockfalls, and other volcanic processes.
