MONUMENTAL LOSS Ticket fraud losses are estimated to have cost the iconic museum over €10M
After the infamous heist that went down last year, a recent crackdown has revealed that the Louvre Museum has lost over €10 million (₱686M) in the past decade from a ticket fraud scheme. Up to 10 people have been arrested, including suspected museum guides and staff.
Based on reports by the French newspaper "Le Parisien," police detained the suspects earlier this week after the Louvre authorities reported some irregularities. Among the detained are two museum employees, several tour guides, and the alleged mastermind behind the scheme. It comes after the museum tipped off investigators about two Chinese tour guides suspected of fraudulently reusing tickets to bring in multiple Chinese tourists inside. Using surveillance and wiretap methods, police managed to find out that the guides were using this method, as well as splitting up tour groups to avoid "speaking fees" imposed on guides. Reports allege the guides also paid off museum staff to avoid ticket checks.
Three vehicles have been seized in connection with the fraud ring, including €130,000 (₱686,710) in cash. Up to €200,000 (₱13.7M) from bank accounts and several bank safes containing large amounts of cash have also been seized. Upon investigation, a similar scheme was allegedly taking place at the Palace of Versailles.
