"I'm here to make that miracle": New UP coach eyes Final Four return

A decade removed from its last Final Four appearance, the University of the Philippines is daring to believe again.
The Fighting Maroons opened their women’s volleyball campaign with a convincing 25-12, 25-9, 21-25, 25-19 victory over the University of the East, signaling a strong start under newly arrived head coach Fabio Menta.
But for Menta, the opening win is only the first step toward a bigger goal.
“We cannot really hide, and I don’t like to hide because we work hard every day. We all know UP hasn’t been in the Final Four for 10 years now. For a very strong and bright school, it’s not good,” said Menta.
“I’m here to make that miracle with these girls. They work hard. We’re very focused,” he added.
While pleased with the result, the Italian mentor acknowledged there is still plenty to refine after surrendering the third set to the Lady Warriors.
“Of course, there are a million things we can do better. We have flashes of greatness, and then those things happen, which at the beginning of the season is probably normal for every team. We know how much we want to work and where we want to go. Now it’s up to the opponents to let us do it,” Menta said.
The Italian coach also lauded the UAAP atmosphere, noting the added pressure of performing before a passionate Philippine crowd.
“The atmosphere is amazing. It’s always been amazing in the Philippines in every tournament. It’s one of the best in the world — a little more pressure than usual because many people are watching,” Menta said.
For senior Irah Jaboneta, the win was both satisfying and revealing as she embraces a larger role with team captain Joan Monares still recovering from injury.
“Siyempre masaya kasi maganda ‘yung result, pero it really shows kung ano pa ‘yung naga-lack sa amin. It’s the character na hindi puwede hanggang doon lang. Tulad nung third set, nag-relax kami,” said Jaboneta, who paced UP with 14 points.
“Now na nagre-recover siya [Joan], I need to step up — hindi lang para sa kanya, but for the whole team. As a senior, kailangan maging role model.”
UP looks to build on its promising start when it faces Ateneo next Sunday, Feb. 22, at the same venue.
