Marcos: Metro Manila Subway brings us closer towards restoring dignity to daily travel

Once the Metro Manila Subway becomes operational, Filipinos will no longer have to pass up opportunities because of traffic and commuting woes.
President Marcos said this during the groundbreaking ceremony of the two underground stations of the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig on Friday, Feb. 13. 
Stressing that the decades-long traffic congestion and lack of public mass transportation in the metropolis have influenced Filipinos’ decisions—from choosing where to work or study to planning their lives—the President said many have declined promising offers and passed on their dreams because of the daily commute they have to endure.
"For decades, traffic in Metro Manila has been more than an inconvenience. It has been a constant consideration affecting our daily decisions.  It influences where we work, where we study, and how we plan our lives," Marcos said in his speech.
"Some students hesitate to enroll in their dream school because the commute will take two hours or more, one way.  Others decline promising job offers because the cost of commuting to work will outweigh the salary and mean less time for family," he added.
"And this is not the kind of future that we want for our kababayans," the President stressed.
The Metro Manila subway, Marcos underscored, "brings us closer towards restoring dignity to daily travel and reaffirming our confidence in what we can achieve as a nation."
The Kalayaan Avenue and Bonifacio Global City (BGC) stations will form part of the 17-station Metro Manila Subway Project that runs from Valenzuela City to Parañaque City, ending at Bicutan in Taguig City, with a connection to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City.
Known as Contract Package 105, the underground stations will be built along 11th Avenue and Uptown Open Parking, and along McKinley Parkway in between Serendra and Market! Market! The stations will cover a total route length of 1.331 kilometers.
According to Marcos, once the entire 33-kilometer stretch of the Metro Manila Subway system is fully operational,  the travel time from Valenzuela to BGC will be reduced from one and a half hours to just 29 minutes. 
End-to-end travel time, on the other hand, is expected to be about 46 minutes.

Careful oversight to be exercised

The President vowed that his administration will ensure that the project, which is financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under a loan agreement, will proceed with "discipline, transparency, and accountability."
"With the scale and complexity of this project, we are exercising careful oversight and close coordination among all the implementing agencies and all our partners," Marcos said.
"We remain committed to sustaining the momentum and to ensuring that this project proceeds with discipline, transparency, and accountability," he added.
He noted that the project will outlast his administration, "but its benefits and impact will endure, serving generations of Filipinos yet to come." 
Once fully operational, the MMSP is expected to serve around 500,000 passengers daily.
Prior to leading the groundbreaking ceremony of the two stations in BGC, Marcos inspected the ongoing construction of the subway's Shaw Boulevard Station along Meralco Avenue, Ortigas Center in Pasig City.
The segment between Shaw Boulevard and Kalayaan Avenue in Taguig City spans about 1.87 kilometers, with tunnel depths ranging from 14 to 34 meters below ground.
