The Philippine National Police (PNP) warned the public, particularly content creators, against the unauthorized use of police uniforms and other insignia representing a law enforcer especially for social media content and other publicity stunts.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said the unauthorized use of police uniform or insignia is a violation of the law, particularly a provision of the Revised Penal Code, as he emphasized that impersonating law enforcement personnel, even for entertainment purposes, carries serious legal consequences.
He issued the statement after a vlogger used a police uniform in producing a social media content.
The vlogger showed a photo of himself wearing the PNP’s ceremonial blue police uniform, which is a violation of the law on the illegal use of uniforms or insignia.
"We are taking this matter seriously, we are now conducting an investigation on this matter to determine accountability and to send a message that there are consequences for the unauthorized use of police uniforms ," said Nartatez.
PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said they are now investigating the incident involving the vlogger, including the source of the police uniform he used in the vlog.
“Part of the investigation is to determine the source of the uniform. But at this point, what is clear is the violation of the Revised Penal Code 179,” said Tuaño,
Meanwhile, Nartatez raised concerns about the role of modern technology in spreading misinformation.
“We are aware that in today’s digital age, AI technology can be misused to create misleading images or videos, including ones that could impersonate police officers. We urge everyone to verify content before sharing because disinformation undermines public trust and safety,” he said.
The PNP Chief also reminded the public regarding the sanctity of the PNP insignia, emphasizing that the uniform represents the authority of the state and the sacrifice of every officer.
The police uniform is a symbol of public service at authority. This must never be used for social media content and publicity stunts. Respect for the uniform is respect for the law," he said.
