Pacific Online scraps E-Lotto plan, divests from e-casino unit
Pacific Online Systems Corp., a gaming unit of Belle Corp., is abandoning its foray into online betting and divesting from an e-casino venture following the government crackdown on digital gambling licenses.
In two disclosures to the Philippine Stock Exchange Pacific Online said the company will wind down its E-Lotto platform project and offload its interest in HHR Philippines Inc., the operator of the Buenas e-casino.
The retreat is a shift for the company, which previously positioned online gaming as core pillar of its growth strategy.
Pacific Online had initially secured a Notice of Award from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office to develop a web-based application intended for the E-Lotto project. However, the national government’s stance toward the industry chilled following high-profile controversies surrounding other digital gambling variants, specifically e-Sabong and Philippine offshore gaming operations (POGOs). The firm noted that the government has since adopted a policy against licensing all forms of online betting platforms, leaving the E-Lotto project in a state of “prolonged suspended animation.”
The company’s Board of Directors determined during a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 12, that the government’s policy shift is unlikely to be reversed. Consequently, the board ordered the unwinding of the corporation’s involvement in E-Lotto, directing management to refocus resources on more feasible opportunities.
Simultaneously, Pacific Online is scrapping its planned acquisition of a 37.5 percent stake in HHR Philippines. The company stated that it has mutually agreed with HHRPI to unwind the investment arrangement, with an undisclosed private third-party investor stepping in to assume Pacific Online’s rights and obligations.
The firm will cease to be a shareholder of record once regulatory compliances are met.
In January of last year, Pacific Online announced a ₱150 million investment in HHRPI to diversify its portfolio. HHRPI holds a gaming license from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. for the Buenas brand.
Because HHRPI is still in its early operating stages, Pacific Online said the divestment is not expected to have a significant impact on its financial position.
Before the policy reversal, Pacific Online had viewed the HHRPI partnership as vital gateway to expanding its presence in the licensed electronic gaming sector.
