NGCP lines up 7 major grid projects for completion this year amid upgrade push
As the grid operator continues to ramp up its facility upgrades and expansions, National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has slated seven key transmission projects for completion this year.
NGCP said on Thursday, Feb. 12, that it has scheduled several transmission line developments for completion in 2026, namely the ₱1.9-billion Amlan-Dumaguete 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission line, ₱2.4-billion Tuguegarao-Lal-lo (Magapit) 230-kV line, and stage one of the Tuy 500/230-kV substation project.
The Tuy project, which is a component of the Tuy-Dasmariñas 500-kV line, costs ₱8.1 billion.
The ₱4.2-billion Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay 138-kV transmission line project and ₱757.98-million Tacurong-Kalamansig 69-kV transmission project are also expected to wrap up this year.
Other projects slated for completion are stage two of the Visayas substation reliability project, worth ₱1.02 billion, and the steel pole relocation along the Hermosa-Duhat 230-kV transmission line, valued at ₱123.84 million.
NGCP spokesperson Cynthia Alabanza said the grid corporation is continuously working with the public sector to ensure that these projects meet their target completion dates.
“We continue to seek the support of government agencies and local government units (LGUs) by ensuring the expedited release of permits related to our projects. Their assistance is vital to ensuring unhampered project implementation,” she said.
Once operational, these investments will help address economic drivers such as load growth, system reliability and security, power quality and technology, the entry of new generating plants—including renewable and non-renewable sources—and complement major projects such as power grid backbones and island grid links.
Last year, NGCP upgraded and expanded 14 substations, including Castillejos substation with a 1,000-megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformer; Calaca and Concepcion substations with 300-MVA transformers; Corolla, Toril, Pitogo, Maramag, Dingle, Calbayog, and Paranas substations with 100-MVA transformers; Davao substation with a 150-MVA transformer; and San Jose and Mabinay substations with 50-MVA transformers.
NGCP also completed the Iloilo substation expansion, a component of the Panay-Guimaras interconnection project.
While NGCP has yet to complete new developments this year, Julius Ryan Datingaling, head of revenue management at the privately led grid operator, said consumers will face higher transmission rates in their electricity bills this month due to lower energy consumption, among other factors.
The average transmission rate for this billing period rose by 13.55 percent, from ₱1.3455 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to ₱1.5279/kWh.
NGCP reiterated that it only charges ₱0.69/kWh for the delivery of its services, as it operates under a revenue cap.
