THE municipality of Matag-ob in Leyte province has imposed a total smoking ban to safeguard public health.
TACLOBAN CITY – The local government of Matag-ob, Leyte on Wednesday, Feb. 11, approved an ordinance imposing a total smoking ban to safeguard public health.
The Sangguniang Bayan unanimously approved the measure that fines violators P1,000 to P2,500, with confiscation of tobacco products and related devices.
A 15-day imprisonment and or fine will be imposed on the third offense.
All establishments, public offices, and conveyances shall post clear and visible "No Smoking" signs in conspicuous areas.
Failure to post proper signages constitutes a violation.
Business establishments violating the ordinance risk revocation of their business permits.
Violations may be reported anonymously. All fines collected will be allocated to a special fund for anti-smoking campaigns and health programs.
Mayor Bernandino Tacoy urged the people to cooperate in creating a smoke-free, vape-free environment, especially for the youth.
"Because we care deeply about the future of our municipality, we have chosen to forgo potential income from the trade of cigarettes and vapes, prioritizing the health and well-being of our people instead,” he said.
