SM Supermalls’ bike initiative, launched during the pandemic, has become a nationwide active mobility system and won 36 recognitions at the 2025 Mobility Awards for promoting safe and accessible cycling across its properties.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) recognized SM Supermalls with one Gold, 11 Silver, and 22 Bronze awards, along with two special citations, for its contribution to making active transport safer, more inclusive, and practical for everyday use.
Introduced at the height of COVID-19 lockdowns when public transport was suspended, the bike program responded to the growing number of Filipinos who relied on bicycles to reach essential services.
As mobility conditions improved, SM sustained and expanded the initiative by integrating Active Mobility into mall operations, renovations, and long-term development plans.
“What began as a heartfelt initiative to support bikers during COVID has now become an integrated bike program spanning every single SM mall in the country,” said SM Supermalls Executive Vice President for Marketing Joaquin San Agustin, noting its role in environmental protection and everyday mobility.
Through collaboration among SM Cares, mall operations teams, and cycling groups, the company rolled out dedicated bike parking, repair and safety stations, clearer cycling lanes, safer access routes, and bike racks cushioned with upcycled tires.
“It started with exclusive bike parking to make it easier for cyclists to access essentials, but as the number of bikers grew, we knew we had to do more,” said Mina Kahn, SM division head and assistant vice president for transportation management
Bike-friendly features are now embedded in new mall developments and renovations, with continued efforts to expand secure parking, improve lane visibility, and support cycling-related activities in partnership with tenants.
In addition to the awards, the DOTr cited Pedal Power 2025 as a Notable Advocacy Program and recognized the SM Supermalls Sustainable Mobility and Bike-Friendly initiative as a Notable Development by the Private Sector.
Transportation officials said the recognition highlights the important role of private sector spaces in promoting cycling as a safe, reliable, and everyday transport option.
