The best presidential candidate for the 2028 polls is current Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo.
Thus, said actress Nadine Lustre, who was at the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Feb. 10 to drum up Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima's filing of a pro-animal welfare measure.
“For me, she is really the best candidate for the presidency,” Lustre said of Robredo.
“I supported her way, way back when she ran the first time. So definitely I’ll support her,” the 32-year-old showbiz personality said.
Lustre was referring to the 2022 national elections, when Robredo vied for the Palace seat. The latter's "Kakampink" movement carried her to a second place finish behind eventual winner, President Marcos.
In 2025, Robredo--a former vice president--ran for mayor of Naga City, a position held multiple times by her late husband, Jesse Robredo.
Robredo has yet to bare her political plans for the 2028 elections, if any.
Lustre said she would respect the former Liberal Party (LP) chairperson's decision, whatever it may be. But she doubled down on her take that Robredo was the "best" choice.
"It's up to her decision, you know, and obviously we respect that. Sometimes the best presidents are those who don’t want to run, so we’ll see.
"Let’s cross the bridge na lang when we get there because right now it's really hard to say,” underscored Lustre, who starred in the 2025 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry Call Me Mother.
On Tuesday, Lustre, Christophe Bariou, and organizations including the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Animal Kingdom Foundation, CARA Welfare Philippines, and Biyaya Animal Care accompanied De Lima in filling the following:
- House Bill (HB) No. 7696 - An Act Strengthening the Enforcement and Oversight of Animal Welfare Laws by Establishing Animal Welfare Desks in All Police Stations and Creating an Animal Welfare Ombudsman Unit for Oversight and Monitoring Purposes or the “Animal Welfare Enforcement Act”
- HB No. 7697 - An Act Establishing a National Plant-Based Health Advocacy Program to be known as “Gulay para sa Kalusugan at Kalikasan Program” or the "Gulay para sa Kalusugan at Kalikasan Act"
- HR No. 748 - Resolution directing the Committee on Natural Resources to conduct an inquiry, in aid of legislation, on the country’s existing environmental challenges and issues, and recommend policies to prevent negative ecological impacts.
