The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is taking the lead in expanding the country’s air connectivity through the launch of direct flights between Manila and Tel Aviv, in line with the plans of Israeli flag carrier EL AL.
In a statement, Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the DOTr is working directly with the Israeli government to open direct flights between the two cities.
Lopez said he will coordinate with Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Dana Kursh to establish the direct route as early as this year.
The potential new route, he said, aligns with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive to widen the country’s air connectivity and enhance bilateral ties with other countries.
This push will likely complement EL AL’s plans to launch a long-haul flight to Manila next year, which remains subject to regulatory approvals.
EL AL is targeting to operate the route with thrice-weekly flights connecting Manila and Tel Aviv.
The carrier said it will use its 293-seater Dreamliner aircraft for the service, featuring economy, premium, and business classes.
Kursh said the Israeli government is hopeful that direct flights between Manila and Tel Aviv will open as early as possible, citing increased interest among Israelis in visiting the Philippines’ top tourism destinations.
“I do identify this opportunity of business as a big opportunity and sky is the limit. So let's try to explore these opportunities both for Israelis and Filipinos,” she said.
Philippine Ambassador to Israel Aileen Mendiola earlier estimated that around 25,000 Israeli tourists visited the country last year, a massive surge from more than 14,000 in 2024.
Meanwhile, over 50,000 Filipinos traveled to Israel last year, the majority of whom were overseas workers such as caregivers and domestic helpers.
Mendiola said a potential increase in these figures would translate into more economic opportunities for both countries, including possible investments and projects.
“This way, the flight is a conduit to all of those interactions that we will be having. And I'm really very excited to make this happen sooner than later,” she said.
