After 30 years of labor, Lola Batik finally finds a home

Carabaos are a unique type of swamp water buffalo found in the Philippines. Known as the “farmer’s best friend,” they play a vital role in agriculture. Beyond their strength, they embody values many can relate to—hard work, patience, and perseverance.
Lola Batik
Like humans, carabaos grow old, eventually making it difficult for them to perform demanding labor. This was the case for Lola Batik, a 36-year-old blind carabao who worked alongside a farmer in Antipolo for more than 30 years. With her age and condition, she was about to be sold to a meat trader—until concerned citizens intervened. Lola Batik was rescued by a private animal welfare group called The Cat House.
The Cat House shared Lola Batik’s story in a Facebook post, revealing that she was often tied near a stream, left unattended during typhoons, and was being sold for ₱80,000. The price later increased to ₱100,000 and included farm equipment and tools.
The post quickly went viral, also shared by Manila Bulletin. With the support of netizens, the vegan community, organizations such as Pawssion Project, and actress Nadine Lustre, the group raised the funds needed to secure Lola Batik’s freedom.
After negotiations were completed, Lola Batik finally found her new home.
The rescue group later shared a video of Lola Batik being unloaded from a light truck, accompanied by a caption that read: “It was a bittersweet moment. Malungkot dahil tiyak na maninibago siya. Hahanapin niya ang mga taong nakasanayan niyang makita sa loob ng mahigit 30 taon. Pero masaya dahil finally, makakapamuhay na si Batik na hindi kailangang magtrabaho sa bukid (Sad because she will surely feel out of place. She will look for the people she’s used to seeing for more than 30 years. But happy because, finally, Batik will be able to live without having to work in the fields).”
The group also reminded the public that choosing plant-based foods over meat is one simple way to help protect animals from cruelty.
Lola Batik’s current condition
In a recent update, The Cat House shared heartwarming news, saying that Lola Batik finally has what she never had before.
“Today, Lola Batik finally has what she never had before—her own little shed. A warm space with lights, clean water, dry hay, [and] proper food. She sleeps peacefully now, and yes, she snores,” the group wrote.
“We may not be wealthy or own a vast piece of land, but here with us, she is safe, and she has a home. She deserves nothing less than love, especially after everything she has been through,” The Cat House added.
