Rains continue over parts of Luzon, Visayas due to shear line, 'amihan'
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned on Monday, Feb. 9 that the shear line may continue bringing moderate to heavy rainfall over parts of Southern Luzon and the Visayas until Wednesday, Feb. 11.
PAGASA weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said the shear line, a weather system that forms when cold northeast monsoon winds, or “amihan,” collide with warm easterly winds from the Pacific Ocean, may trigger flash floods or landslides in the affected areas.
Areas expected to receive 50 to 100 millimeters of rain (moderate to heavy) until Tuesday noon, Feb. 10, include Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Samar, and Leyte.
From Tuesday noon to Wednesday noon, moderate to heavy rainfall may persist in Sorsogon, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar.
Meanwhile, Aurelio said the northeast monsoon continues to bring cooler air over most of Luzon, including Metro Manila.
Cloudy skies with moderate to, at times, heavy monsoon rains are also expected over Cagayan Valley, the rest of Bicol, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Aurora, Rizal, Laguna, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, and Romblon.
Light rains may also occur in the Cordillera Administrative Region.
Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon are expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light amihan rains.
The rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorm activity.
Aurelio also noted that there is currently no low-pressure area or tropical cyclone within or near the Philippine Area of Responsibility as of Monday morning.
