Norway strengthens ties with Iloilo through maritime, trade, and energy partnerships

Ambassador Christian Lyster and his trade and business team, Ana Florentino and Claus Gaasvig, visited Iloilo City to discuss Norway’s contributions to the maritime industry, seafood importation, renewable energy, and circular economy initiatives. The delegation’s first stop was a courtesy visit to representatives of Mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu, led by Mathilde Treñas, special assistant to the mayor; Atty. Iloilo City, known as the “Heart of the Philippines,” is a dynamic hub of education, commerce, and culture in Western Visayas. The visit coincided with two significant events: the 78th anniversary of the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University and the Norway-Philippines Business Forum: Expanding Trade and Investment Opportunities in Western Visayas. Both occasions underscored the growing collaboration between Norway and the Philippines in fostering international partnerships and regional development.

The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Manila, in partnership with the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines – Western Visayas, hosted the business forum, which highlighted Norway’s engagement in key sectors such as maritime, renewable energy, tourism, seafood, and agriculture. The forum also emphasized the role of the European Free Trade Association Free Trade Agreement in boosting trade between Norway and the Philippines. Ambassador Lyster served as keynote speaker, offering insights into the potential for growth and partnership. The event drew strong participation from government agencies and private sector representatives eager to explore opportunities for economic advancement in the region.

Ambassador Lyster also addressed the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University conference, stressing the importance of innovation, education, and international cooperation in maritime development. He highlighted Norway’s deep-rooted connection to the sea and its commitment to sustainability, strong institutions, and continuous training as foundations for the future of global shipping. The partnership between Norway and the Philippines is exemplified by initiatives such as the Norwegian Training Center in Manila, which has empowered thousands of Filipino seafarers while promoting diversity and inclusion in the industry.
As maritime technology continues to evolve, embracing green solutions, digitalization, and cybersecurity, training and adaptability remain crucial. Institutions like the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University are preparing the next generation of seafarers to meet these challenges. With shared values and goals, Norway and the Philippines are working together to build a safer, greener, and more innovative maritime future.
