BACOLOD CITY – The Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) is seeking a thorough investigation of the Feb. 4 accident that claimed the life of a student trainee in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental.
Eight Bayawan City government employees also died in the accident.
The school is mourning the death of Warren Arseñas, a fourth year College of Industrial Technology (CIT) student from the NORSU Bayawan-Santa Catalina Campus.
NORSU said they will coordinate with the Bayawan City government authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.
Arseñas was an on-the-job trainee at the Agricultural Engineering Unit of the Bayawan City government at the time of the incident.
The university said that the OJT program was implemented under a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the university and the local government unit (LGU) that defined their roles and responsibilities.
The university noted that prior to deployment, CIT conducted an orientation for students and parents to ensure proper understanding and preparation for the program. Arseñas completed the orientation.
NORSU condoled with the family of the victim and said they have extended immediate support and assistance.
“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate accident involving our intern and alumni. May our thoughts and prayers bring them comfort and strength,” the CIT-NORSU Bayawan Campus also said.
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in Negros Island Region said they are investigating the incident.
