GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The National Commission for Senior Citizens has condemned the recent ambush of a retired Army colonel who served as regional president of the Federation of Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines in the Socsksargen region.
NCSC Commissioner Edwin Espejo urged police to thoroughly investigate the killing of retired Col. Leonardo Songcaya.
Songcaya was killed by unidentified gunmen while aboard his pickup truck in Matalam town, North Cotabato province.
Espejo described Songcaya, 68, concurrent president of the Provincial Federation of the Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines, as a steadfast advocate for elderly people.
“His leadership and commitment to community service earned him the respect of many,” Espejo said.
Espejo said that the NCSC stands in solidarity with the FSCAP and all senior citizens in mourning the great loss of a senior citizens’ welfare advocate.
“We honor Songcaya’s legacy by continuing the work he so passionately championed – protecting the rights, dignity, and welfare of our older persons,” Espejo added.
Matalam Mayor Oscar Valdevieso has offered a P500,000 reward to people who can pinpoint the identities of the perpetrators.
