BUTUAN CITY – Authorities have stepped up relief operations for families affected by tropical cyclone “Basyang” in the Caraga region.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (PDRRMC) in Surigao del Sur reported that 52,000 people or 17, 270 families in 61 barangays were displaced.
The town of Carrascal was the most affected, with 14 barangays and close to 9,000 families or 21, 600 individuals, followed by Cagwait with 6,456 families or 23, 715 individuals in 11 barangays.
Seventy-nine evacuation centers were activated in the cities of Tandag and Bislig and the towns of Hinatuan, Cantilan, Marihatag, Lianga, Cortes, Barobo, San Miguel, and Lingig.
Tandag City reported 21 barangays with 1,130 families or 3,086 individuals affected. Nine-hundred thirty-six or 2,950 individuals are currently housed in 26 evacuation centers with the rest in their families and friends.
Surigao del Sur Gov. Johnny T. Pimentel ordered local chief executives and department heads to implement comprehensive preparedness measures for the safety of people. “The safety of our people remains our highest priority. Let us stay vigilant, proactive, and united as we protect our communities.”
Two-thousand families were affected in Butuan City, Surigao del Norte and Surigao City, and Agusan del Sur. One-hundred fifty families living in Barangay Lumbocan here have evacuated.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development- Caraga and city and municipal social welfare offices ae conducting relief operations.
One-hundred seventy-nine families or 478 individuals from La Paz, Balete, Cabugo, and Magobawok in Bayabas, Surigao del Sur have received relief assistance. Other municipalities and Tandag and Bislig have also received relief and food assistance.
The action center of DSWD-Caraga distributed 337 family food packs to evacuees in two Surigao del Sur towns – 211 in Lingig and 126 in Hinatuan.
The agency, with the Surigao City government, provided 37 ready-to-eat food packs to stranded passengers at the Eva Macapagal Terminal Port.
The Police Regional Office-13 has mobilized teams to assist in rescue and relief operations.
The Police Regional Office-10 Reactionary Standby Support Force (RSSF) and search and rescue (SRR) teams were tapped to ensure immediate emergency response and safeguard communities in Northern Mindanao.
Nine-thousand, two-hundred ninety-six families or 34, 097 individuals were affected in Northern Mindanao.
