PEZA, iSON Tower team up to boost ecozone connectivity
The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) has forged a partnership with Indian telecommunications technology firm iSON Tower Ltd. Inc. to enhance digital connectivity within the country’s economic zones.
In a statement, the investment promotion agency (IPA) said PEZA Director General Tereso Panga and iSON Tower Chairman Vivek Gupta signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Feb. 3 to formalize the partnership.
Under the MOU, both parties will establish a framework for the development and upgrading of telecommunications infrastructure in government-managed economic zones.
“We welcome this partnership and are committed to delivering meaningful, long-term development across our ecozones,” Panga said.
Through the agreement, Panga said PEZA aims to accelerate its efforts to upgrade connectivity within economic zones, making them more attractive to both local and foreign investors.
Asked whether the MOU includes an investment component, he said this remains subject to iSON Tower’s due diligence, although he expressed confidence that it would be finalized within the year.
Panga said the company is planning to build telecommunications towers inside economic zones to improve digital connectivity.
“They will also explore the establishment of microgrid solar power systems in the zones,” he told Manila Bulletin. “So we expect big-ticket investments from iSON Tower.”
Meanwhile, Gupta said the MOU forms part of iSON Tower’s commitment to enabling resilient and inclusive digital infrastructure to support the country’s growth priorities.
“Through this collaboration, we aim to support business continuity, attract high-quality investments, and contribute to the country’s long-term digital transformation,” he said.
In August last year, iSON Tower’s parent firm, iSON Group, announced plans to invest up to $300 million in the Philippines to boost digital infrastructure over the next decade.
The company plans to build 300 to 400 new towers annually, leveraging infrastructure sharing to promote cost-efficient network expansion for major mobile operators.
Through the MOU, PEZA also supports the government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), which seeks to accelerate the country’s digital transformation.
Established in 2017, NBP aims to improve internet speed and affordability through the rollout of telecommunications infrastructure such as fiber optic cables and wireless technologies.
