Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Have you thought of where you’ll be taking your special someone? There are plenty of highly sought-after destinations to celebrate the special day, though one place has gained notoriety as a place rich with heartbreak: Baguio City.
As far as urban legend goes, stories online share how unmarried couples who venture up North together are destined to break up. It’s unclear how exactly this belief came to be, though some accounts trace it back to the Pink Sisters Convent along Brent Road. According to the story, a nun from the convent fell in love with a priest. Eventually, they formed a secret relationship and were happy together until it caught the attention of church authorities. They were forced to break things off, and the priest decided to leave the priesthood altogether and distance himself from the nun. Devastated, the nun is said to have died from depression shortly after. It is believed that her death caused a curse to befall any unwed lovers who visited the convent.
URBAN LEGENDS Pink Sisters' Convent gained notoriety for its tale involving the ill-fated love of a nun and a priest.
We’d argue, however, that venturing out with your partner is a true test of love. By traveling to distant places, you learn more about the needs of your partner and how they act in situations outside of their comfort zone. Traveling together is a vital time for finding any red flags and strengthening your bond. Baguio City is also rife with sweet locations for sweethearts everywhere to enjoy. In the City of Pines, you’ll always find ways to warm your hearts, despite the cool temperature.
LOVER'S LAKE Visitors can rent out boats to traverse Burnham Park's lake.
FRESH FROM THE MARKET Ube jam, strawberry preserves, and fresh strawberries from the Baguio City Market.
First to come to mind is Burnham Park. No visit to Baguio is complete without a lovely stroll in the park. A popular activity for couples is to rent out the swan pedal boats at the park’s lake. Just across, there’s the skating rink where you can try skating together. There are also bumper cars and some fair rides to try out. Next to Burnham Park, the Baguio City Market is an ideal place to find local delicacies to taste with one another. It’s sweetness galore just thinking about the strawberry and ube jam jars all lined up at the pasalubong stalls.
TREE TREK Baguio City's tall trees are an ideal refuge from the sun.
Just a short drive away, the former US military base Camp John Hay is also a popular spot for lovers and families, with its towering pine trees. They serve as an ideal shade from the sun when having a picnic on its grounds. Plus, the hiking trails give visitors a chance to admire the calm nature surrounding the area.
TWIN PEAKS LIFE The Manor at Camp John Hay serves as a cozy lodge-style setting.
Of course, with any Valentine’s Day celebration, flowers are a must. February is the perfect time to visit Baguio City if you’re a flower lover, as it hosts the annual Panagbenga Festival. Festivities last throughout the whole month, leading up to the grand floral float parade. It’s a magnificent spectacle seeing how local businesses band together to create such unique float designs. Outside of the Panagbenga season, there’s also the Baguio Botanical Garden to stop by and smell the flowers together.
FLORAL WONDERS Panagbenga's annual floral float parade is a sight to behold.
Wherever you find yourselves celebrating Valentine’s Day, just remember that love itself is an adventure. What’s important is that you are venturing out to places with the one you love.
