Gilas hopes to open camp next week for Feb window of FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

The national team was initially looking at the possibility of setting up the camp by Feb. 11 but had to push back due to the schedules of Gilas’ overseas players.

“We expect the Japan and Korean guys to come in through the week of the 16th, so we will start by then,” Cone told Tempo-Manila Bulletin in a text message.

The Korean Basketball League, where Carl Tamayo and Kevin Quiambao are playing, isn’t taking a break until Feb. 19 while the Japan B.League, where Dwight Ramos, AJ Edu, Quentin Millora-Brown and Kai Sotto are seeing action, will be pausing its games starting Feb. 15.

Still, the start of the buildup should still give head coach Tim Cone 10 days to prepare for the pair of home games against New Zealand and Australia.

The Nationals are set to host the Tall Blacks on Feb. 26 at the Mall of Asia Arena before facing up against the Boomers, three days later, on March 1.

Meanwhile, the pushback on the start of the buildup should also give June Mar Fajardo, CJ Perez and Calvin Oftana ample time to rest and recover after seeing action in the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup which ended just last Sunday, Feb. 1.

Other players in the pool like Scottie Thompson, RJ Abarrientos, Troy Rosario, Chris Newsome, and Juan Gomez de Liano should also be available for the start of the training.

Naturalized player Justin Brownlee, who is expected to suit up for Barangay Ginebra for the Commissioners Cup, is already in the country. He is actually a part of the Meralco team that is seeing action in the East Asia Super League.

The Nationals currently share the top spot with Australia in the Group A with similar 2-0 records although the coming window will have huge implications to Gilas’ chance of advancing to the next round of the qualifiers.
