Valentine fever hits Dangwa as flower sellers stage early displays
Valentine’s Day fever is already in full bloom in Dangwa, Manila, as flower vendors rolled out heart-shaped arch, colorful displays, and early promos, days ahead of Feb. 14, anticipating a surge in buyers.
Several stalls along Laong Laan, Dos Castillas, Dimasalang, and nearby streets have begun decorating their shops with red and pink accents. Some vendors have even put up heart-themed arches, each adding their own gimmicks to attract customers.
According to vendors, prices of roses have started to climb this week, though some stalls are keeping rates steady for now, with increases expected next week as Valentine’s Day approaches.
Joy, 32, a vendor along Laong Laan Street, said her prices remain the same: a single long-stem rose sells for P50 to P250, while bouquets range from P300 to P1,500 depending on size and wrapping.
Edna, 46, who has been selling flowers along Dos Castillas for two decades, said her flower arrangements have already gone up since the Traslacion season due to high demand. One dozen roses now sells for P1,000 and above, depending on the decorations.
Aside from roses, vendors are offering alternatives for budget-conscious buyers, including sunflowers priced at P100 to P300 per stem, mixed arrangements, and crocheted or preserved flowers that last longer and cost less than fresh blooms.
Some customers have already started buying early to avoid higher prices and long lines closer to Valentine’s Day.
With the expected influx of shoppers, vendors anticipate heavier foot traffic in the coming days.
Dangwa remains one of Manila’s busiest flower markets, especially during Valentine’s Day, with vendors competing not only on prices but also on creativity to attract customers.
