Mitsubishi Xpander
2025’s total vehicle sales are in and some of the results are truly surprising. Chief among them is the new No.1 selling car in the Philippines, the Mitsubishi Xpander. The Xpander has finally toppled the former leader, the Toyota Vios, which has held the distinction for several years. Nonetheless, Toyota Motor Philippines is still the top-selling auto brand in the country, with most of the Top 10 best-selling cars occupied by its models. Toyota still continues to retain a commanding lead among all the automaker brands, selling 227,585 cars and taking up a staggering 45.45-percent market share of all new vehicles sold in 2025. Mitsubishi, by contrast retains second place with 86,808 vehicles sold, for a 17.63-percent share. These figures were compiled by AutoIndustriya.com, based on submitted figures from the Chamber of Automobile Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI), Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA), and Philippine Automotive Dealers Association (PADA).
Philippine auto sales in 2025 concluded with 492,438 units, gaining slightly by 3.74% against the previous year. The new number one indicates that Filipinos may now be gravitating towards a more versatile family vehicle. The Mitsubishi Xpander sold a total of 28,081 units (both MY2025 and MY2026).
Not surprisingly, the Xpander’s competitor, the Toyota Avanza also reaped the benefits of this change in buyers’ priorities, advancing to third place among the Top 10 bestsellers. The Toyota HiAce, one of the largest MPVs on sale, also found itself in fifth place. By contrast, the Innova, a consistent Top 5 placer, found itself in 10th place last year.
Toyota Vios
The Toyota Vios, a subcompact sedan, was just barely edged out by the Xpander with 27,811 units sold, a difference of 270 units. It now occupies the second place spot. The Vios’s competitor, the Mitsubishi Mirage, found itself in eighth place in the Top 10, selling 17,757 units.
This shake up certainly highlights steadily changing attitudes and priorities among car buyers. Some may ask, what happened to electric vehicles and hybrids? Their sales are definitely growing, but not quite as high to crack the Top 10 just yet.
BYD Sealion 5
As we mentioned, Toyota and Mitsubishi still occupy the number 1 and number 2 spots respectively among auto brands, however, there is a new third placer. That brand is BYD.
The Chinese automaker leapt from 11th in 2024 to third place in 2025. It sold 26,122 units in total. However no data was provided on how many of each particular unit were sold. BYD now commands 5.3-percent of the market, a huge gain compared to its previous 1.02-percent share. This massive jump is nothing to scoff at, however, when compared to Toyota’s and Mitsubishi’s sizeable market share, it still has a long way to go before it can claim the second place, much less first place spot. After all, Mitsubishi sold more Xpanders and Toyota sold more Vioses than all of the BYD models combined.
However, with BYD continuing to offer many more compelling electrified models, it might just be a matter of time.
