A public utility jeepney (PUJ) driver was caught on camera appearing to confront an SUV driver after he was allegedly seen counterflowing along A. Bonifacio Avenue in Cainta, Rizal on Tuesday night, Feb. 3.
In a video uploaded by the SUV driver, the jeepney driver can be seen getting off his vehicle to confront the SUV driver after he refused to move lanes, blocking the counterflowing jeepney.
The jeepney driver approached the SUV’s window and explained that he intended to turn into a nearby gas station, which is why he changed lanes. However, the gas station is reportedly still about 100 meters from the area.
When the SUV driver did not respond, the jeepney driver said, “Edi videohan mo (Then go ahead and film it),” before sticking out his tongue in what seemed like a teasing gesture.
The man then returned to his jeepney to get his mobile phone and film the SUV as well.
Before leaving, the jeepney driver made inappropriate remarks toward the SUV driver, who just responded with a laugh.
Meanwhile, Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief Assistant Sec. Markus B. Lacanilao on Thursday, Feb. 5, ordered a show-cause order to be issued against the jeepney driver.
According to the order, the registered owner of the vehicle, together with the driver involved, is required to attend a hearing conducted by the Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) of the LTO. The hearing is scheduled on Feb. 12, at 10 a.m. at the IID office in East Avenue, Quezon City.
They are required to submit explanations on why the driver should not be held administratively liable for reckless driving, obstruction of traffic, driving against traffic, and motor vehicle operation with or without defective/improper/unauthorized accessories, devices, equipment, and parts.
They are also required to explain why the driver’s license should not be suspended or revoked for being deemed an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.
LTO said the jeepney has been temporarily placed on alarm status to prevent any transactions while under investigation. The driver’s license will also be temporarily suspended for 90 days and must be surrendered before the scheduled hearing.
“Ang insidenteng ito ay malinaw na paglabag sa mga batas trapiko at hindi katanggap-tanggap na pag-uugali lalo na para sa isang driver ng pampublikong sasakyan na dapat maging huwaran sa kalsada (This incident is a clear violation of traffic laws and constitutes unacceptable behavior, especially for a public utility vehicle driver who is expected to set an example on the road),” Lacanilao said.
He added that the LTO is determined to ensure that all drivers, especially those transporting passengers, comply with regulations to maintain the safety of everyone on the road.
“Hindi tayo magpapahintulot na ang mga ganitong aksyon ay makakasira sa mga pagsisikap nating palakasin ang disiplina sa trapiko at protektahan ang mga mamamayan. Umaasa ako na ang mga kasangkot ay makikipagtulungan at haharapin ang mga paratang na ito nang bukas ang isip (We will not allow such actions to undermine our efforts to strengthen traffic discipline and protect the public. I hope those involved will cooperate and face these allegations with an open mind),” he continued.
