Repairs along the heavily used C5 Road will start ahead of the rainy season to address worsening traffic and prevent further road deterioration, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said on Thursday, Feb. 5.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said the early rollout was ordered after officials noted that C5 has deteriorated faster than EDSA, making road repairs crucial to improving traffic flow and public safety.
Potholes and uneven pavement along C5 have significantly slowed vehicle movement, worsening congestion in the area.
“We all know that C5 is worse than EDSA because many trucks pass through it, so many sections are badly damaged and causing severe traffic,” Dizon said.
He added that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had directed the immediate implementation of C5 rehabilitation this year, particularly before the onset of the rainy season.
Rehabilitation works along EDSA are already ongoing and are expected to last up to eight months.
The project covers the entire stretch from Roxas Boulevard to Monumento, although construction will be paused during the rainy season for safety reasons.
The EDSA rehabilitation is being implemented in phases, with Phase 1 covering the Roxas Boulevard to Orense section in Makati.
Work in this area is slightly ahead of schedule.
If weather conditions remain favorable, the project may be extended further, possibly reaching Boni Avenue or Shaw Boulevard, Dizon said.
