PEOPLE gather around an oarfish discovered in Quezon.
GUINAYANGAN, Quezon – A dead giant oarfish – dubbed the doomsday fish – was found floating in the municipal fish port here on Wednesday morning, Feb. 4.
It was discovered by a fisherman who immediately reported it to the Coast Guard Sub-station here.
The Coast Guard coordinated with the Municipal Agriculture Office.
Fishery technicians conducted an examination and said that it measured 3.59-meters long, 0.70-meters wide, and weighed 22 kilograms.
An oarfish is a deep-sea species rarely seen in the shallow part of the sea.
Due to the condition of the fish and for the safety of the public, it was not allowed to be eaten and was properly disposed.
The discovery of the oarfish, traditionally associated with impending bad weather, coincided with a tropical cyclone east of the Philippines – “Basyang.”
