'Basyang' approaching Caraga; 15 areas under Signal No. 2

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said 15 areas remain under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 on Thursday evening, Feb. 5 as Tropical Storm Basyang (international name: Penha) moved closer to the Caraga region.
As of 7 p.m., the center of Basyang was estimated 115 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.
It was moving west-northwestward at 20 kilometers per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph.
On the forecast track, the center of the storm is expected to make its initial landfall over Surigao del Sur Thursday evening or early Friday morning, Feb. 6.
After crossing Mindanao, Basyang is likely to emerge over the Bohol Sea on Friday morning and may pass close to or make another landfall over Siquijor and the southern portion of Negros Oriental by Friday afternoon to evening.
By Friday evening or early Saturday, Feb. 7, it is expected to emerge over the Sulu Sea and then traverse the northern portion of Palawan between Saturday afternoon and evening.

PAGASA said minor to moderate impacts from gale-force winds are possible within areas under Wind Signal No. 2, while minimal to minor impacts from strong winds are possible in areas under Wind Signal No. 1.
It added that Basyang is forecast to slightly weaken upon landfall as it interacts with the landmass, but it will likely remain a tropical storm.
Further weakening into a tropical depression is forecast by Saturday, and it is expected to be downgraded into a low-pressure area by Sunday afternoon or evening, Feb. 8.
