The Philippine National Police (PNP) has committed full support in the identification of all the cadavers that were retrieved from the passenger vessel that sank off the waters of Basilan on Jan. 26.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said they already mobilized a team of experts from the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) to assist in the future identification process after families of the victims have already begun providing DNA samples.
“We are closely coordinating with the Philippine Coast Guard and other agencies as we focus on proper collection, handling, and analysis of DNA samples provided by families,” said Nartatez.
“Our goal is to ensure that all procedures are followed properly and accurately to expedite the identification for them to be properly turned over to their respective families,” he added.
Police said one of the biggest challenges in this process is the condition of the recovered bodies and the need for precise forensic procedures.
To date, a total of 42 individuals were confirmed dead due to the sinking of MV Trisha Kirsten 3 off Baluk-Baluk Island in Basilan.
Nartatez directed that SOCO be properly staffed and equipped to handle multiple DNA analyses simultaneously, and all procedures and results shall be documented carefully to prevent errors.
