PNP confident of conviction of 'cop-killers' in Mollenido, Casauay cases
The Philippine National Police (PNP) is confident that the cases they filed against those involved in the killing of a policewoman and her eight-year old son, as well as those behind the death of a police sergeant in Bulacan would result in conviction in courts.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C Nartatez, Jr. said they obtained pieces of documents and testimonies that could stand in court against those involved—at least four people in the case of Police Senior Master Sergeant Diane Marie Mollenido and her eight-year-old son, John Ysmael and more than 12 people in the case of Police Staff Sergeant Renato Casauay, Jr.
“Our investigators in both cases really did their job to solve the cases since Day 1. All the angles were pursued and all the pieces of evidence were obtained and meticulously reviewed to build a strong case,” said Nartatez.
“With the pieces of evidence we have to support the cases we have, we are confident that there’s a certainty of conviction of the court against those involved,” he added.
Four suspects in the Mollenido case are already in police custody. Police are currently finding out whether or not Mollenido’s ex-husband, a dismissed cop, is also involved.
The death of Mollenido and her son was a result of a fake car deal, with the police saying that the principal suspects, a couple who turned out to be the victim’s wedding godchildren, planned and carried out the attack over fear that their modus of scamming the policewoman would be exposed.
Mollenido earlier gave P550,000 to the couple and another P450,000 from the sale of her Innova to complete the transaction for a second hand Mitsubishi Montero.
The Montero, according to the police, is non-existent.
In the case of Casauay, four people were also arrested, including a Police Corporal, who failed to effect the arrest of Julian Salamat when the latter went to him to confess the crime.
He said the current priority is to arrest all those involved, including the gunman Salamat who was reported to be an asset of Casauay.
Nartatez welcomed the decision of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to offer a P1 million reward for the arrest of Salamat and other suspects charged in connection with the killing of Casauay.
He said the reward offer will help the PNP in running after Salamat and his group.
“I commend all our personnel, from the commanders down to our personnel on the ground, for their hard work and dedication to solve these two cases,” said Nartatez.
“This only proved the commitment of the PNP to enforce the law against the violators, ensure justice to the victims, and bring peace of mind to the Filipino people,” he added.
