Negros Oriental, Siquijor cancel classes as storm approaches
BACOLOD CITY – Negros Oriental and Siquijor have suspended classes due to tropical depression “Basyang.”
Negros Oriental Gov. Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria suspended classes on Feb. 5 and 6 as Basyang will traverse Northeastern Mindanao and Central and Western Visayas between Thursday and Friday.
Sagarbarria said cancellation of in-person classes will safeguard students, teachers, and school personnel from the adverse weather conditions and enable them to prepare for landfall.
Educational institutions were encouraged to implement alternative modes of instruction to maintain continuity of learning.
School heads and officials were enjoined to exercise sound discretion in work arrangements and office operations with due regard to the well-being of their employees.
Gov. Jake Vincent Villa cancelled classes in Siquijor on Thursday due to inclement weather from Basyang.
Villa, in an executive order, stated that the safety, security, and overall welfare of students, teachers, and school personnel remain the paramount concern of the provincial government.
This highly-urbanized city also suspended classes on Thursday upon the recommendation of the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (BDRRMC) with the concurrence of the Department of Education (DepEd).
Mayor Greg Gasataya encouraged modular distance learning performance tasks and projects to ensure that learning competencies here are met.
The Bacolod Emergency Operations Center is on red alert to ensure heightened monitoring, rapid response, and coordinated action among all concerned agencies.
