AboitizPower moves to boost grid stability with new battery projects
Aboitiz Power Corp. (AboitizPower) announced that its renewable energy (RE) provider, SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP), will begin the development of two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects that will contribute to the country’s grid stability.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) on Wednesday, Feb. 4, SNAP said it has achieved financial close for the BESS projects tied to the second phase of the 40-megawatt (MW) Binga hydroelectric power plant and 40-MW Ambuklao hydroelectric power plant in Benguet province.
These hydropower facilities, with integrated battery storage systems, will help provide ancillary services to the Luzon grid through the reserves market.
“The new capacity builds on SNAP’s growing energy storage portfolio, including the 24-MW BESS at the Magat hydroelectric power plant, which has been delivering ancillary services since 2024,” the company said.
These developments will further expand SNAP’s energy storage portfolio, which already includes the 24-MW Magat BESS that has been providing ancillary services since its commercial operations began in 2024.
The additional 40-MW Binga BESS and 16-MW Magat BESS are also scheduled to start commercial operations sometime in 2026.
“Once completed, SNAP’s total BESS capacity in operation and under construction will reach 160 MW.”
The company is set to continue expanding its hydropower projects, as it previously said it has nearly 300 MW of capacity in its project pipeline, which includes a potential ground-mounted solar project that was previously under evaluation.
SNAP is a joint venture (JV) between Aboitiz Renewables Inc. (ARI) and Norway-based Scatec ASA. ARI focuses on developing various RE assets across the country. Its most recent acquisition is a greenfield solar project in Bohol province, which the company purchased through a ₱478-million deal.
The solar development is expected to begin commercial operations by 2027.
