Brooke Van Sickle and Myla Pablo flashed their championship pedigree as Nxled survived a 25-23, 13-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-12 thriller against Farm Fresh in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference at the Filoil Centre in San Juan City on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
Making their Chameleons debut after being recruited from the Petro Gazz Angels on hiatus, the dynamic duo immediately set the tone by firing timely attacks to power the squad to their first victory.
Van Sickle, a three-time Conference MVP, exploded for 20 points built on 18 kills and two blocks, while Pablo chipped in 19 points -- all from attacks -- as Nxled dug deep to claw back from a 1-2 set deficit.
Nxled coach Ettore Guidetti praised the team’s resilience and ability to adjust, especially for a squad navigating a major overhaul.
“It’s a very good first game. It was pretty difficult for us to find the correct combination, but luckily in the fourth and fifth set, we were able to get it, so we’re happy for this win,” said Guidetti.
Van Sickle and Pablo echoed the sentiment.
“It’s good that the jitters were out. There were a lot of ups and downs, but I’m really proud of the team for coming together and having a good energy when it really mattered,” Van Sickle said.
“Maraming lapses. Kulang pa sa communication, pero kahit papano naman, andyan si coach. Nahanap namin yung kailangan naming gawin para ipanalo yung laro,” Pablo added.
Against another team in transition, Nxled proved it could rise above the challenge and delivered when it counted with Van Sickle and Pablo also teaming up with MJ Phillips at the forefront of their assault.
Phillips contributed 13 points, including two aces.
Van Sickle also took charge of their defense along with Jules Tolentino, stopping Farm Fresh’s hard-hitting spikers by combining four of the team’s five blocks.
For a moment, the Foxies looked to have regained momentum after a first-set stumble, with Trisha Tubu, Ces Molina, and Royse Tubino firing attacks from all angles, but the Chameleons quickly regrouped and outworked them when it mattered most.
Tubu scored 26 points, while Molina and Tubino added 14 and 13 in a losing effort.
