President Marcos has initially approved the proposal to extend the validity of registration for new vehicles to five years, Malacañang said.
Marcos made the approval during a meeting with Department of Transportation (DOTr) acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez at Malacañan on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
According to Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro, Lopez proposed extending the validity of registration for new vehicles from three to five years in a bid to bring significant relief to our motorists.
"Nagkaroon po ng suggestion si Secretary Lopez na gawin na po iyong mga new vehicle, ang registration ay imbes na three years ay gawing five years at naipakita po ni Secretary Lopez ang kagandahan po nito (Secretary Lopez made a suggestion to change the registration period for new vehicles from three years to five years, and Secretary Lopez was able to show the advantages of this)," Castro said in a Palace briefing.
"At inisyal po na naaprubahan ito ng Pangulo at susundan po ito ng mga memorandum na gagawin po ng DOTr so hintayin na lamang po natin ‘to (This was initially approved by the President, and this will be followed by memoranda to be issued by the DOTr, so we just have to wait for this)," she added.
During the meeting, Marcos ordered the DOTr to prioritize the welfare of commuters, keep facilities clean and comfortable, and ensure that trains are reliable and on time at all times.
Lopez also reported to the President that the partial operations of the North–South Commuter Railway are expected to begin in 2027 for the Valenzuela to Malolos, Bulacan route, and in 2028 for the Malolos to Clark route.
Partial operations of MRT-7, which will connect Quezon City and Bulacan, are also targeted for 2027.
Meanwhile, the Metro Manila Subway is scheduled to begin its demo run in 2028 and is expected to be fully operational by 2033.
