DAVAO CITY – The provincial government of Sultan Kudarat urged the people to remain prepared and vigilant as classes and work resume after days of suspension due to swarm of earthquakes last week.
Gov. Datu Pax Ali Mangudadatu lifted the suspension on Feb. 1 through an executive order.
However, schools in coastal towns of Kalamansig, Lebak, and Palimbang shall implement modular classes to ensure the safety of learners and teachers.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a total of 3,319 earthquakes since Jan. 19. It added that over 1,000 have been plotted but only 114 were felt. However, Phivolcs noted that number of tremors per day have decreased.
Mangudadatu reminded the public to monitor and follow the government's advisory.
The swarm of earthquakes triggered preemptive evacuations in many parts of Sultan Kudarat, particularly in the coastal towns.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development-Region 12 reported that over 11,000 families have been affected by these earthquakes.
DSWD-12 chief Loreto Cabaya Jr. said that they have distributed food aid for affected families.
Sultan Kudarat has no casualties and no major infrastructure damage from these earthquakes, the governor said.
Mangudadatu said that while the recorded earthquakes have already dropped, he urged his constituents to be alert at all times. “This is out of our control, all we can do is to be prepared.”
