LEGAZPI CITY – Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon assured Albayanos that unfinished infrastructure projects would be fast-tracked to completion by the end of 2027 or early 2028.
Dizon said the completion of the infrastructure projects would improve comfort, accessibility, and safety in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s (PBBM) directive.
"The President has repeatedly emphasized the need to finally fix the Maharlika Highway properly. PBBM wants it completed the right way,” Dizon said on Sunday in a press conference during his visit to Albay and Sorsogon.
During the second leg of the Maharlika inspection, Dizon checked the 10-story building of the Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center, a flyover in Barangay Malabog, and the widening of the Maharlika Highway in Guinobatan, Albay.
Dizon said the hospital building is behind schedule, noting that it should be over 50 percent complete but remains at 36 percent since construction began in 2023.
"Very delayed, so we need to fast-track so that by the end of 2027 or early 2028, it will be finished. This is a 10-story building, but construction work has been limited to the fourth floor so far," he said.
He assured that the P3.5 billion hospital building will be completed as planned, as part of Marcos’ legacy hospital initiative.
An unfinished flyover project in Barangay Malabog, Daraga, Albay, was also inspected by Dizon.
Dizon said the flyover is intended to decongest traffic on the Maharlika Highway for passengers from the Bicol International Airport, but it has remained unfinished since 2021.
“Our engineers said they can do it by 2027. Our commitment to Gov. (Noel) Rosal is to complete these unfinished projects and hopefully by the middle of 2027,” he said.
He noted the project would open for bidding this February after its contract with the Discaya-owned Alpha Omega Construction was terminated.
“The project is P159 million, but it needed an additional fund of P290 million. The flyover project is only 12 percent complete,” he said.
In addition, Dizon visited a widening project in Barangay Morera, Guinobatan and ordered the work completed before Holy Week this year.
He also traversed the Maharlika Highway in Sorsogon province, before going to Samar and Leyte provinces.
Dizon commended Sorsogon Gov. Edwin Hamor for a four-lane Maharlika with shoulder and drainage. (PNA)
