Chief Justice Gesmundo pays tribute to Manila Bulletin 'for responsible journalism, genuine public service'
Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo paid tribute to the Manila Bulletin for its 126 years of “unwavering commitment to truth, accuracy, impartiality and independence.”
In a message to Manila Bulletin’s anniversary on Feb. 2, the Chief Justice said “these principles define not only responsible journalism, but more significantly, genuine public service.”
The Supreme Court (SC) will celebrate its 125th anniversary on June 11.
Gesmundo reflected on the shared journey of the courts and the press.
“Although distinct in mandate, both institutions are united by a common responsibility to uphold the truth, strengthen democratic ideals, and serve the Filipino people with integrity,” he said.
He pointed out that “a free and responsible press, like an independent judiciary, remains indispensable to the rule of law and to a just society.”
The Chief Justice noted that “through decades of honest and balanced reporting, the Manila Bulletin has earned the trust of generations of Filipinos.”
He also said the Manila Bulletin’s pages “have chronicled the nation’s triumphs and trials, enriched public discourse, and contributed to a citizenry capable of meaningful participation in civic life.”
“As the judiciary renews its commitment to justice and the rule of law, we recognize and commend the Manila Bulletin for its enduring role as a partner in democracy,” he added.
