The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that Mayon Volcano logged 389 rockfall events and four volcanic earthquakes over a 24-hour monitoring period from 12 a.m. on Jan. 31 to 12 a.m. on Feb. 1.
The agency said Mayon remains under Alert Level 3, indicating ongoing magmatic unrest.
According to Phivolcs, it recorded 26 pyroclastic density currents at the volcano during the same monitoring period.
The agency reported that sulfur dioxide emissions from Mayon Volcano were measured at 4,079 tonnes per day on Jan. 31.
Phivolcs said the crater glow was fairly visible to the naked eye.
It added that ground deformation data indicate that the volcano’s edifice remains inflated.
Phivolcs urged the public to keep out of the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and warned against unauthorized entry into the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ), noting that flights near the volcano are strictly prohibited.
Under Alert Level 3, the agency said Mayon may generate hazards such as rockfalls, landslides or avalanches, ballistic fragments, lava flows and lava fountaining, pyroclastic density currents, moderate explosions, and rainfall-induced lahars.
